1855-O G$1 (1855-O Gold Dollar) NGC AU53. The only Type II G$1 minted in New Orleans. Subdued mint luster remains within the devices of this Southern branch mint Type 2 1855-O Gold Dollar, which comes in an old type NGC holder. Sufficient separation exists among the lines at the tips of the feathers and the bow knot to warrant the grade. The strike is typical for the issue in that the peripheries of both sides are strong. The dentils are well struck as well.

The Type 2 gold dollar, which followed the Liberty Head of 1849-1854, has to be called a design failure. James Longacre, the coins designer used a motif similar to the three dollar coin. However, he made the new coin broader and thinner. The coin did not strike up well, especially in its centers. Many new coins looked worn even though they were fresh and uncirculated. Consequently, Longacre redesigned the coin after only two years.

The New Orleans Mint was authorized in 1835 by President Andrew Jackson, hero of the battle of New Orleans. The bill that Jackson signed also authorized the mints at Charlotte and Dahlonega. William Strickland, a Philadelphia architect designed all three branch mint buildings. The building was made in the solid, bulky Greek Revival style of architecture. It was the largest of the three branch mints and located at major port of entry. Unfortunately Strickland did not account for the soft ground around the site. Because of it, the building had to undergo numerous repairs throughout its history.
