1856-C $2.50 Quarter Eagle NGC AU53 - With a mintage of 7,913 pieces, the quarter eagle struck at the Charlotte Mint in 1856 is among the more available of southern gold coins. Yet, most of the remaining examples show heavy signs of circulation, and it was not until recent times that this issue has become available in higher grade. Earlier, this issue was virtually unknown in Mint-State and very rare in About Uncirculated, as mentioned by Breen in his Encyclopedia:
Usually VF; Ex. Rare above AU, only one seen in Unc.
The present piece, while showing some sign of circulation is a wonderful and totally original example of this scarce date. Fresh looking, with luster remaining in the protected areas. The coin has wonderful and original color, with green, orange and red highlights on both sides. The present offering is a scarce and seldom encountered issue, looking better than most examples of this date, that sure is to please the southern-gold specialist.
