1857-S $20 SSCA (1857-S Double Eagle SS Central America) PCGS AU53 CAC. A considerable amount of bright mint luster remains on this shipwrecked 1857-S Double Eagle. Very light abrasion and just a touch of wear on the high points are seen. There is also a small bag mark just under and to the left of Liberty s chin. Two small copper spots are seen next to the U in United on the reverse. The coin is graded AU53, which is confirmed by CAC. The strike is full and sharp on both sides. Designed by James B. Longacre, the coin portrays Liberty as a young woman, in profile, looking left. Her hair is tied behind with two curls flowing down her neck. She is surrounded by thirteen six-pointed stars. The heraldic eagle on the reverse has elaborate ribbons on each side to symbolize the new denomination, the double eagle.
In 1985, the Columbus-America Discovery Group raised ten million dollars and began to search for the wreck of the Central America . They found it at a depth of 8,500 feet off the coast of South Carolina . It is estimated that the total coins, ingots, and gold bars were worth more than one hundred million dollars.
In its population report, for this variety, the No Serif, High S, CAC shows 2 in AU53 with 1 better.
