1858-O Seated 50c (1858-O Half Dollar) ANACS VG8. Seated Half Dollar. This Southern branch mint, Liberty Seated 1858-O Half Dollar has lightly toned devices over slightly darker fields. The coin has a well struck reverse with full rims and details for the grade. The obverse also has full rims and a clear L in LIBERTY. The fields are reasonable clean and free of major distractions.
The Seated Liberty half dollar was minted from 1839 to 1891. There were five varieties because changes in the weight of the coin. The first variety from 1839 to 1853 had no motto and weighed 13.36 grams. Variety 2 of 1853 had arrows at the date and rays around the eagle. It weighed 12.44 grams. Variety 3, used from 1854 to 1855, had arrows at the date and no rays and continued to weigh 12.44 grams. From 1856 to 1866, Variety 1 was resumed. The present coin is an example of the resumed Variety 1. Variety 4 added the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above the eagle and was issued from 1866 to 1873, and Variety 5, from 1873 to 1874, added arrows at the date to show the increase in weight to 12.50 grams. The 1875 to 1891 coins resumed the weight standard of Variety 5 with no arrows at the date.
