1860-D Gold Dollar (1861 G$1) NGC AU55. This Type 2 1860-D Gold Dollar is richly radiant. It has a very slight green-gold cast, due to the alloys high silver content as is seen on many Dahlonega Mint coins. The coin is virtually mark free and shows no signs of mishandling frequently seen on gold dollars. There is light, even wear on the high points of the design, which accounts for the AU55 grade.
The strike is weak in the central portion of the obverse and the bow on the reverse. Like all gold dollars of this date, the U is blurry and the borders are weak. Some clash marks are seen, which is also characteristic of this rare date. The design shows the contradictory motif of a Caucasian Liberty wearing a stylized Native American headdress. Longacre used this device in several denominations.
The wreath of corn, cotton, maple, and tobacco leaves around the denomination and the date on the reverse, was taken from the Flying Eagle cent. James Longacres Type 2, Large Size, Broad Head design was issued from 1856 to 1889. It is a redesign of the Type 1 made necessary because the date wore out so easily that the new coins looked as if they were circulated. On the Type 2s, the obverse relief was lowered to allow the design to be struck up. With a total mintage of 1,566, the 1860-D is rare in all conditions.
In its population report, NGC shows 16 in AU55 with 31 better.
