1860-O Seated Dollar (1861-O Seated $1) PCGS MS62. This beautiful New Orleans dollars obverse is light grey with touches of very light beige, blue, and violet toning. On the reverse the contrast is stronger. The devices are light sliver-grey and the field is toned blue, beige, and tan. There is also a broad stripe of light beige-blue toning running from the eagles head to the feathers below the shield.
The coin is lustrous on both sides. Libertys profile, shoulder, and arm shimmer as does the outline of the eagle and the olive leafs. There are a couple of small contact marks in the obverse field in front of Libertys face. The reverse is free of all distracting marks. There are some clash marks on the obverse, which do not detract from the grade. Neither dies the reverse die break from the rim through AM to the eagles wing.
The strike is full on both sides. Robert Hughes Liberty Seated Design, No Motto, was minted from 1840 to 1866. It modified Gobrechts Flying Eagle design. Hughes changed the figure of Liberty by making her arms heavier, reducing the size of the rock, and adding drapery to the arm holding the staff. For the reverse, he abandoned the flying eagle in favor of the heraldic one similar to the Great Seal of the United States.
