1861-65 Civil War Token, The Flag of Our Union NGC AU58 BN. F-214/416a. This near-Mint State, 1861-1865 Civil War Token has surfaces that are light and dark chocolate brown, with the latter closer to the edge. The colors attest to the coins originality. In addition the surfaces are clean and free of abrasion marks worthy of individual description. Just a touch of wear on the highest points keeps this neat token from a Mint State grade.
During the Civil War, regular coinage disappeared from circulation. Into this void came the merchant and Civil War token. They were used as substitutes for government issued coinage and made by private mints. Patriotic tokens, such as the present piece, had portraits of Lincoln, military images, and flags and slogans.
In April 1864, a law passed prohibiting privately issued one or two cent coins or tokens. In June all private coinage was abolished.
