1861 CSA Restrike 50C NGC MS62. An uncirculated example of this CSA restrike, of which just 500 pieces were produced by J.W. Scott. This was done by grounding the reverse of original 1861 half dollars, and restriking them with the original confederate die, albeit extensively lapped. This obverse die shows the the confederate coat of arms along with a wreath and a Phrygian cap, and the legend CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA.
This was done ca. 1879, after the four original confederate half dollar proofs were discovered. Breen, in his encyclopedia extensively describes the process of producing the restrikes:
He [J.W. Scott] obtained 500 1861 half dollars, probably many coming from circulation, supposedly all 0-Mint coins, though this is impossible to prove or disprove. Proskey, under his supervision, placed the first few on a brass block, obv. down, probably within some kind of plain collar to prevent undue spreading under pressure, and overstruck their Union revs. with the Confederate die.As the Union rev. impressions mingled too obviously with the Confederate, Proskey planed off the revs. of the remainder of the 500 before overstriking them.
While the host coin spent some time in circulation, the present piece is still designated as an uncirculated piece by NGC. Some light scuffing limits the grade of this coin, which otherwise is a true original example of these restrikes. This represents a rare opportunity for anyone who wishes to own an example of a confederate coin.
