1861 Gold Dollar (1861 G$1) ANACS AU58. Civil War 1861 One Dollar Gold. Lots of mint luster is seen within the devices of this Large Head Civil War dated 1861 Gold Dollar. A small scratch on Libertys chin and light surface abrasion keep this coin from a mint state grade. The strike is strong on the obverse and above average on the reverse with just slight weakness on the knot. Clash marks are present on both sides of the coin. They are common to this issue, and they do not detract from the coins grade or its value.
Clash marks are a Mint error caused when the two dies strike each other without a planchet in between. Often the Mint workers will polish off the clash marks in an attempt to reuse the die without showing the distracting marks. Not too much care was used to remove the clash marks from the present coins dies.
The 1861 gold dollar was made during the Civil War under Union authority for commerce in the North.
