1861 Gold $1 (1861 Gold Dollar or 1861 One Dollar Gold) NGC MS64 CAC. This Civil War dated 1861 Gold Dollar shimmers with layers of bright mint luster. Except for a few wispy marks, the coin has clean surfaces with light patina especially within the wreath. The grade of MS64 is confirmed by CAC. Bold clash marks are seen on the obverse at Libertys forehead and the top of the feathers. Smaller clash marks are at the lower portion of Libertys neck and the truncation. These clash marks, which are present to a lesser extent on the reverse as well, do not detract from the grade or value of the coin.
The Civil War Gold Dollar was issued throughout the war years. The Indian Princess, Large Head motif was used by its designer, James B. Longacre. The Large Head design is actually a Type 3 for the gold dollar. Type 1 used a coronet motif, and Type 2 used a similar but smaller Indian Princess Head design.
In 1861, 527,150 gold dollars were made at the Philadelphia Mint. The largest Federal mintage of the Civil War Gold Dollar was 1,361,355 in 1862. The next three years saw much lower mintages with 6,200 in 1863, 5,900 in 1864, and the lowest 3,725 in 1865.
In its population report, CAC shows the 1861 gold dollar with 12 confirmed at the MS64 level with 8 better.
