1861-O Seated 50C (1861-O Half Dollar) ANACS EF40 Details. This New Orleans Mint, Civil War dated Liberty Seated 1861-O Half Dollar has all the technical grading requirements for an EF coin, including a full LIBERTY, the scroll, and the shoulder clasp. The coin has retoned with dark tan showing at the periphery. The obverse is overall lighter than the reverse. The stars show detailed centers as does Libertys head and the reverse shield.
Coins dated 1861-O were struck for the Federal government, the State of Louisiana after it seceded from the Union, and the Confederate States of America. However, all of these coins were made from Federal dies so it is impossible to distinguish one from another. Some 1861-O coins were used by the Confederacy to strike CSA half dollars in which a Confederate obverse die was paired with a regular reverse die.
In 1828 William Kneass modified John Reichs previous design of the Capped Bust dime. The modifications include smaller dentils and uniform diameters because of new equipment at the Mint.
