1861 Quarter Dollar (1861 25C) Seated, PCGS MS62. Civil War Quarter Dollar. This semi-proof like Liberty Seated 1861 Quarter Dollar shimmers with mint luster on the main obverse devices. Subdued luster is seen beneath the reverse toning. The figure of Liberty is mainly white with shades of grey and lavender. The field is darker with shades of pink, blue, green, and tan. The reverse is predominantly medium tan with small areas of white, green, gold, and darker tan. A few small marks are seen on the obverse on Libertys arms, leg, and hidden in the drapery, which are consistent with the grade.
Made under Union authority during the Civil War, the 1862 Liberty Seated quarter was used for commerce in the North. However, during this time silver was hoarded. In 1861 New York banks suspended specie payment. The lack of government coinage in circulation led to the extensive use of Civil War tokens.
