1861 Type 2 Quarter Eagle, NGC AU-58 CAC. With a mintage of 1,283,788 pieces, the 1861 quarter eagle is a common civil war dated coin. This is an example of the type 2 reverse, introduced in 1859. On the new reverse, the arrowheads and letters are considerably smaller than on the reverse used before.
The present piece has full luster, except for a few breaks at the highest points which account for the AU grade. Toned to a reddish-gold color, this coin is very pleasing to anyone seeking an example of this date and/or of the new reverse.
