1861 Type 1 $2.5 Quarter Eagle, Old Reverse PCGS MS62 CAC. Struck during the year when the Civil War commenced, this coin has been struck using the much scarcer type one reverse. On this variety, which only constitutes a small number of all 1861 quarter eagles the letters and arrowheads are larger then the new type, which was first introduced in 1859. For some particular reason, most likely lack of supplies at the US Mint, the old hubs would be used for a few more years. After 1861, the old hub finally was put to a rest, and all future quarter eagles would be struck with the new hub.
When viewed side by side, the difference between the two types is rather obvious. The new hub future much smaller letters and arrowheads, and the letters are also more widely spaced. It gives these small gold coins a less crowded look, and we can conclude that the Mint was satisfied with the new and improved design. No further changes would be made until the end of the series in 1907.
This is a wonderful example of this rare issue, which is extremely hard to find in uncirculated condition. The fields are clean, and the color of the coins is a light yellow, with some darker color still showing in the protected areas. Luster is full, which adds to the crisp look of this coin. Stickered by CAC, this coin is an excellent opportunity for a quarter eagle of Civil War set collector.
