1861 $2.5 Type 2 Quarter Eagle, NGC MS64. 1861 $2.50 Type Two. A popular type coin, struck in the year the American Civil War commenced. Generally available in lower grades, but MS-64 and finer pieces are hard to find with original surfaces. Fully struck and highly lustrous, this near-gem survivor would represent the quarter eagle denomination struck in a historic period of American gold coinage.
As can be expected for the grade no major abrasions are seen on either side, which are colored to a light yellow. This piece is an example of the type two reverse, first introduced in 1859 but struck alongside the old reverse until this year. All subsequent issues would future this reverse, and while not considered to be a separate type it remains to be a subtype within the series. Great quality and a good coin for either the collector of high grade gold coins or conscious investor of American gold coinage.
