1862 1C Indian (1862 Indian Cent) PCGS MS63. Civil War Coin. This mint state, lustrous, Civil War 1862 Indian Cent comes in an OGH (old green holder). Unlike typical copper-nickel cents of the early 1860s this piece is well struck. The coin shows full details on the feathers, diamonds, leaves, and shield. No wear is seen, as expected for a mint state coin, and the surfaces are original, clean, and, for the grade, free of individual distractions worthy of mention.

James B. Longacre designed the Indian Cent. The obverse shows Liberty facing left in profile wearing a LIBERTY inscribed headdress. Her hair is combed back and over her ear and flows down beneath the truncation. A band with four diamonds is attached to the back of the headdress and comes over her hair past the truncation. She is surrounded with the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA with the date below. The reverse shows the denomination written as ONE CENT surrounded by an oak wreath with a Union shield at the top and a ribbon holding the parts of the wreath and three arrows together below. Dentils are around the periphery of both sides of the coin, and the edge is plain. Civil War dated Indian cents are in demand and eagerly sought by collectors and those who want an authentic piece of Americana from that era.
