1865 $20 (1865 Double Eagle) PCGS MS62. A splendid and uncirculated example of the last 1865 Double Eagle struck during the Civil War. With a mintage of 351,175 this issue can not be considered as having a low mintage, but the majority of remaining examples survive in lower circulated grades. Uncirculated coins are very scarce, as mentioned by Q. David Bowers in his Guide Book of double eagle gold coins: Mint State coins are prime rarities and tend to be at or near the MS-60 level. The discovery of the S.S. Republic, which yielded 320 double eagles of this date, has significantly improved the availability of this issue in higher grades. Yet, these have been quickly absorbed into the market and intensive searching is required to find a prime piece such as the present offering.

With the sesquicentennial of the Civil War rapidly approaching, one does not have to be a genius to know that prices of issues such as these will rapidly rise when more people realize the rarity of some Civil War gold coins.

The present coin is bold and lustrous, and appears to have the so-called shipwreck effect. Nicely struck, and at first glance it has the looks of a higher graded coin. No major hits are marks on either side, and the fields are especially free of blemishes. A great coin for both the investor and collector, with demand due to increase.
