1865 Indian Cent (1865 1C Indian) PCGS MS62 RB. This Civil War dated 1865 Indian Cent has lovely red and brown toning with flashes of mint luster within the devices. The coin is well struck especially on the tips of the feathers and the diamonds. The leaf and shield details are also strong as are the dentils on both sides. The coin is darker in the center and has lighter toning towards the rim. No wear is seen, as expected for a mint state coin.
As the Civil War ended, the need for small coinage was extreme. Tokens and fractional paper currency had replaced federal specie. The Philadelphia Mint met this need by minting over 74 million cents and over 33 million two-cent pieces in 1864 and 1865.
