1865 Quarter Eagle (1865 $2.50 Liberty Head) Liberty Head, NGC AU53 CAC. Issued during the final year of the Civil War, the 1865 quarter eagle is a rare coin that is sought by many collectors but precious few will ever have the chance to own one. Out of an original mintage of only 1,520 pieces, it is estimated that perhaps only 32-35 examples of this date survive to the present day.
Just 27 have been certified by PCGS/NGC combined to date, with a lone example in mint state, making this one of the rarest issues within the entire series. Therefore, any offering of this date in any grade, especially one in a higher grade such as this, warrants special consideration.
With that backdrop it is certainly good fortune to locate a coin that is as attractive as it is rare. This is just such a coin. The example offered here exhibits sharp detail and is very well struck. Subtle dashes of orange-gold tones can be seen on the lovely yellow proof like surfaces which are notably free of distracting marks. Luster still remains in many of the protected areas amongst the devices. CAC has reviewed and approved this coin as well which attests to the PQ nature of this piece.
The collector/investor who requires the finest rarities for his/her numismatic portfolio need look no further than this superb Civil War gold quarter eagle.
