1865-S Half Dollar - 1865-S Seated 50C PCGS XF45. This Civil War dated, branch mint 1865-S Seated Half Dollar has soft, cool, original surfaces that show light circulation. The coin is predominantly tan with highlights of silver-grey on the devices. There is a complete, strong LIBERTY on the shield. The edges of the scroll are distinct, and Libertys shoulder clasp shows plainly. The strike is full on both sides of the coin.
The obverse depicts Liberty seated looking over her shoulder to the left. She balances the Union Shield inscribed LIBERTY with her right hand and holds a staff on which is placed a Phrygian cap in her left. There are seven stars to the left and six to the right interrupted by her head and the capped pole. The dated is below. The reverse shows the heraldic eagle looking left. It is surrounded by the required inscription and the denomination written as HALF DOL. below. Dentils are around the periphery of both sides.
This is a scarce civil war date half dollar that's even nicer than many of the about uncs in the marketplace. PCGS Population report as of 8/31/2011 shows 6 in this grade with only 34 higher.
