1868 $20 Double Eagle NGC AU53 CAC. Looks 55 ! 1868 $20 NGC AU-53 CAC The 1868 double eagle is one of the scarcer double eagles from the Philadelphia Mint. Only 98,575 were produced, and most, if not all circulated for at least some time in the Reconstruction period. As such, this issue is extremely scarce in higher grades, and it is estimated that less than ten true uncirculated examples exist. As such, this wonderful about uncirculated coin is a true bargain and an excellent example of this issue for the conscious collector.

This coin is also an example of the popular type 2 double eagles, struck for only a short period. As these are a distinctive type, all are in demand by type collectors, who usually settle for one of the more common issues. For people who dont mind including an about uncirculated example to represent this type, the coin we offer here would be an excellent example. Certified by NGC in a new holder and stickered by CAC for exceptional quality it is totally original. Both sides are nicely toned to an orange-yellow gold color, and some luster is still visible in the protected areas. Some circulation marks are visible, but these are limited to the unprotected fields. A great example of this scarce and ever-popular type struck shortly after the American Civil War.
