Certified by PCGS in one of the popular old green holders, this Philadelphia minted double eagle is of exceptional quality. With a mintage of 175,130 it can not be considered to be a low-mintage coin, but in comparison with the output of San Francisco for the same denomination that year (686,750) it is not high either. Unlike these San Francisco coins, however, many were saved in higher quality, making this a good issue to represent the type 2 double eagles in an advanced type set.

Both sides have toned to a nice orange-yellow color which has become increasingly hard to find on these gold coins. The fields are remarkably mark-free on both sides, and the strike is sharp. Wear or luster breaks are virtually non-existent, even on the highest points of the design, and we think that this coin very well could upgrade when resubmitted. Mint state coins, in any numerical grade are much harder to find, but when this coin is awarded such a grade that would be a true prize for the new owner of this coin.
