1872 Quarter Eagle - 1872 $2.5 NGC MS62

1872 Quarter Eagle (1872 $2.5) NGC MS62, Lustrous PQ! Very scarce ! The 1872 Quarter Eagle is a very curious issue, as are many similar quarter eagles from this era. It had an extremely low mintage of just 3,000 coins, lower than many branch mint issues from the pre 1861 period. Yet, those are much more popular, due to their status as southern gold coins struck in the less habited areas of the United States, romanticized in many novels. Much forgotten by collectors, issues like the 1872 quarter eagle are extremely interesting as well, as the low mintage means that not many are around in any grade. During this period, collectors continued to buy Proofs from the Mints and forgot about the circulation strikes. Of course, circulation of these issues was lower than the previously mentioned branch mint issues, and thus is relatively easy to find in uncirculated grades, this does not mean that they are easy to find.

PCGS and NGC combined have graded just over 100 examples in all grades, and we expect that number to include at least multiple resubmissions of the same coin. This issue is just not offered very often in any grade, and especially in uncirculated grades any example should be considered with great care. The present example is a wonderful uncirculated example with full prooflike surfaces, but some slight weakness and lack of full reflectivity confirms it status as a business strike. These features certainly do not distract at all, and might even add to the desirability of this particular coin. Apricot to orange gold color is seen on both sides, a natural coloration not too often found. The surfaces are relatively mark-free for the grade, and no individual abrasion is worth to be mentioned in this description. Only a handful has been graded higher and it would be hard to replace this coin with a better example.
