1873 Double Eagle (1873 $20) Open 3, NGC MS61 CAC. 1873 $20 Liberty Head, With Motto, Value Twenty D., Open 3. Struck under President Ulysses S. Grant just three years prior to the Battle of Little Big Horn (also referred to as "Custer's Last Stand") , the 1873 issue has two known varieties, the close 3 and the open 3. The example offered here is of the latter type. While common in grades up to about uncirculated, it becomes a more challenging task to locate choice pieces in full mint state as is the specimen offered here.
This exceptionally attractive piece is very clean and solid for the grade. The surfaces exhibit deep amber and wheat tones which combine to give it above average overall eye appeal. CAC has reviewed and approved this coin as being premium for its grade as well. With the increased demand for gold in the market today, United States Liberty Head Double Eagles are enjoying a surge of popularity making the acquisition of above average coins such as this even more difficult.
