The 1874-S Double Eagle is rather common in VF-AU grades and not particularly difficult to locate in grades up to MS61 with a bit of diligence. However, in higher grades, the 1874-S achieves the status of a scarce and desirable rare coin with a mere 69 certified as MS62 by PCGS/NGC. Only 7 pieces have been graded higher and all at MS63. It should be noted that there is a significant price gap between the MS62 and MS63 level affording the keen eyed collector/investor an opportunity when premium MS62 examples are offered.
