1875-S $20 (1875-S Double Eagle) NGC MS64. Gorgeous! Very low pop! 1875-S $20 - With a mintage of 1,230,000 coins for circulation, the 1875-S double eagle is surprisingly hard to find in near gem uncirculated grades. In fact, most major collections (as per Garrett and Guth, 2008) have lacked an example of this relatively common issue in the grade we featured in the present offering. It is apparent that heavy circulation took its toll on this issue, but also the large amount of handling these coins went through. As a result, the uncirculated coins that remain to exist do so in lower numerical grades, mostly 60 or 61. Any finer than that is scarce, and even become condition rarities.

As can be expected for the grade this coin is virtually mark-free, with only a few minor hits visible in the fields, none overly distracting. Booming with luster, both sides give a fresh look to the coin, which is further strengthened by the sharp strike which is visible on both sides. With this issue seldom available in any grade higher than MS-62, and only two pieces graded MS-65 by NGC or PCGS, this is a prime opportunity for the specialist of double eagles, San Francisco minted coins or the investor in rare American gold coinage.
