1877-CC Double Eagle (1877-CC $20) NGC AU50. Carson City Double Eagle. Nice surfaces and luster within the devices characterize this very neat Carson City double eagle. This coin has a premium quality look. The strike is above average.
1877 marked the first year of the Type 3 design. It differed from the previous ones in that the denomination is written out as TWENTY DOLLARS as opposed to the abbreviation used in the earlier types. The double eagle was minted as a result of the huge gold discoveries in California. It was felt that large domestic and international transactions would be facilitated by a larger coin. The two banners on either side of the shield symbolize the twenty dollar denomination.
Designed by James Longacre, the double eagles of the nineteenth century are generally attainable. The San Francisco, with an original mintage of 1,735,000, is the most available for the date; the Philadelphia, with 397,650 is next; and the least for the date is Carson City with 42,565. In its population report NGC shows 1872 San Francisco mints, 846 Philadelphia mints, and 753 from Carson City.
