1878 $20 (1878 Double Eagle) PCGS XF45. The Mint started turning out large amounts of Morgan silver dollars in 1878, but other denominations continued to be struck as well. One of these was the largest gold denomination, first struck in 1850 and valued at Twenty (Silver) Dollars. An extremely popular denomination, the 1878 is a relatively available issue in lower grades. This is a nicely circulated specimen, with vibrant luster still visible in the protected fields.
Both sides have toned to a nice yellow color, with relatively few abrasions noticeable on either side. Some wear from circulation is visible, but the coin appears to have been sharply struck with good details of the design still visible. Relatively affordable and a nice piece of American history from the 19th century, not as easily found as the later dates from the early 20th century, which are often included in type sets.
