1879 $10 (1879 Eagle) NGC MS61. Brilliant and uncirculated, this scarce ten dollar gold piece had an original mintage of 384,740. While high compared to the mintages of the Branch Mints, this remains to be a relatively low mintage date, especially compared to the next year, with more than 1.6 million eagles produced at the Philadelphia Mint.
Yet, these pieces trade at approximately the same levels as the large mintage dates of the late 19th and early 20th century, making them ideal representatives of this type in an advanced type set focused on scarce, lower mintage coins.
Fully uncirculated with flashy luster, this gold piece has been certified by NGC in a new holder. The reverse is much nicer than the obverse, which has some marks that account for the grade. Lightly green-golden coloration is seen, especially on the obverse, noting the originality of the present piece. Fully struck and well detailed, the coin appears to be of premium-quality to us, and displays excellent eye-appeal.
In its population report as of April 2012, CAC shows 2 in MS61 with only 12 better.
