1880 G$1 Gold Dollar NGC MS68*. By the 1880s, gold dollar production was extremely scarce as the coins were virtually nowhere used in circulation anymore. Of this particular issue, only 1,600 pieces were minted, an extremely low number for a regular issue United States coin. Luckily enough for the present-day collectors, a fair amount of pieces were set apart for future generations. As such, most of the remaining pieces are in high grade, up to the gem level and sometimes even higher, such as the present offering.

Yet, not a single coin that was minted in the 19th century can be considered to be common in this exceptional grade. Near perfect, this is one of only 2 MS-68* pieces graded by NGC for the date, and the population for the whole type in this grade is extremely low as well. As such, all offerings such as the present should be considered with great care by type set collectors.

This coin has the 2nd lowest series of the whole series minted in Philadelphia, with only the 1875 having a lower mintage at 400 pieces struck for circulation. As such, examples have always been in demand due to its low mintage, as also mentioned by Garret and Dannreuther in their Encyclopedia of U.S. gold coins:

Virgil Brand was said to have owned hundreds of this date. The date remains popular with todays collectors as well. The low mintage figure is enticing for a coin that trades at only a small premium for the type.

As the grade would indicate, this coin is near perfect. Booming with luster, completely original and with excellent eye-appeal, this coin is the perfect example for the type or date set collector. Only a few very minute marks are seen under magnification which would keep this coin out of an even higher holder, but are barely to invisible to the naked eye. Act quickly to secure this condition-rarity for your collection or investment portfolio.
