1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar (1881-S Morgan S$1) PCGS MS68 CAC. Mint luster is subdued on the obverse but plentiful on the reverse of this beautifully toned 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar. About two thirds of Libertys hair and the wheat above her head band are seen in bright white, while the rest of the obverse is a mixture of tints of grey, rose, tan, blue, and brown. On the reverse, the eagle and the wreath are in cameo-like contrast to the field. While predominantly white, the eagle has touches of lavender, grey, and yellow in its feathers.
The field shows variegated toning with shades of brown, tan, dark grey, blue, green and russet. The MS68 grade, confirmed by CAC needs no further explanation. The strike is impeccable on both sides of the coin. The 1881-S dollar is an unusual coin in that it is readily available in gem condition. Its mintage was 12,776,000. In 1938 the Treasury released several bags of uncirculated coins. Later in 1960-61, over 40,000 more uncirculated coins were released, and there were possibly 10,000 more in the Redfield hoard.
While the 1881-S is a common date, the current piece is a condition rarity. Only two coins have been certified in higher numeric grades by PCGS and NGC combined.
