1882-CC Double Eagle (1882-CC $20) PCGS AU53. Strong mint luster still radiates from the surface of this1882-CC Carson City double eagle. Aside from a few contact marks on Libertys face and neck, the surfaces are clean and pleasing. A trace of wear is seen on the high points of the design, accounting for the grade of AU53.

The strike is full on the obverse with all the hair details showing, less so on the reverse. Double eagles of 1877 to 1907 are Type 3s. The first type had no IN GOD WE TRUST, and the second had the denomination as TWENTY D., which was unchanged from the first. In order to accommodate the new motto, the circle of stars had to be slightly enlarged.

With an original mintage of 39,140 one might think the coin is available in abundance. However, the PCGS population report shows only 679 certified in all grades.
