1882-CC Double Eagle (1882-CC $20) PCGS XF45. A surprising abundance of mint luster remains on this lightly circulated 1882-CC Double Eagle. Abrasion marks in the fields and wear on the high points keep this coin from a higher grade. While technically an XF, it could easily have been in the AU category. Aside from the first three stars, the strike is sharp. The 1882-CC is a Type 3 double eagle because the domination is now written out as TWENTY DOLLARS. The previous type had it abbreviated as TWENTY D. The Type 2 was made when the motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added to the oval of stars above the eagles head.
The Type 3 double eagle is what is usually meant when someone talks about Liberty Head twenties. For years they were saved in bank vaults as a hedge against inflation, especially in Europe after FDR recalled gold coinage in the United States in 1933. Some of the Type 3s had huge mintages. For example, 1904 had a mintage of 6,256,699. The present coin had an original mintage of 39,140. In its population report PCGS shows 672 in all grades.
