1884-CC $20 Double Eagle PCGS MS63 CAC. Extremely sharp strike, with crusty color & surfaces. Very scarce. None better! The 1884-CC double eagle is considered to be one of the more available $20 gold pieces of that date in circulated condition, with a total mintage of 81,139 pieces. However, uncirculated examples are extremely scarce, and a piece such as the present can be considered to be a prime condition-rarity. None have been graded higher by any of the major grading companies, and only a handful has been graded the present grade level.

In his 2003 book The Mint on Carson street, Author Rusty Goe identified a total of three pieces which had been graded MS-63. While the population reports show a slightly higher number, it appears that these are mostly resubmissions of the same coins, and that the small number of three coins could very well be correct. In the same book, Goe lists this particular coin, pedigreed to the Nevada Collection, which was sold in recent years, as a coin with a notable pedigree and certainly one of the finest known for this issue.

While some groups of uncirculated pieces have appeared in Europe in recent years, these are always in lower quality, usually heavily bagmarked. A few individual coins of this issue have showed up as well, and these are often cleaned and dipped, or even damaged. With that information, one wonders if there are any choice uncirculated pieces out there waiting to be discovered and brought to the numismatic community. With the rarity of this issue in choice uncirculated, we think the answer would be a firm no.

Certified by PCGS with the Nevada collection pedigree on the holder and stickered by CAC for exceptional quality, this piece could very well be the absolute finest of this issue. It features an extreme sharp strike, clean surfaces and full satin luster on both sides. It has a crisp look, and the coin appears to be totally original. An important offering of this condition-rarity, this offering represents a rare chance for the specialized double eagle or Carson City gold collector.
