1884 Quarter Eagle $2.50 PCGS PF64 CAMEO CAC. The 1884 quarter eagle is a very rare issue with a reported mintage of just 73 pieces. With this mintage, and an estimated 35-40 pieces known to exist it falls in the mid-range in terms of scarcity for the series. However, this does not mean that this is a date which is easily acquired, or frequently encountered in Proof condition. Full proofs with strong Cameo contrast are very rare, and as such we should be prized with the offering of this near-gem example of this Proof gold coin. With its excellent eye-appeal it would make the perfect addition for a high-end Proof type set or date, and could be the center-piece of any collection.

The dies of the 1884 Proof quarter eagle were extensively polished before and during striking, as die polish is prominent on a number of different areas on the coin, in particular on the obverse. These include the lower part of LIBERTY, especially under BE, and the center of the obverse, in the area around Libertys ear. Because of its limited mintage, as usual, only a single pair of dies was used, and these characteristics will be visible on every example, unless heavily circulated. The date is large, but centered between the bust and the rim and does not touch any of the other devices. A number of minor die marks are also noted on both sides, and indicate the careful handling these dies received while they were being made.

Few people have the funds to collect Proof gold by date and denomination, but the ownership of a single coin is within reach of many advanced collectors. For the purpose of representation in a type set the present coin would be perfect. Its quality is outstanding, with orange-peel fields and only some very minor number of hairlines in the fields. As can be expected, the strike is strong an full, and no individual blemishes are worth to be mentioned. Only a fraction short of a coveted and extremely rare gem grade, this coin has been stickered by CAC. This will attest the quality of this coin, and is a further indication for the steady and increasing value this coin is likely to be in the future. A great coin with a low mintage and excellent eye-appeal make this an excellent investment as well.
