1885-CC $20 Double Eagle PCGS XF45. Struck at the popular Carson City Mint in Nevada, this lightly circulated double eagle is a reminder of the Wild West times of the United States. It is also one of the scarcest double eagles struck at the Mint in the 1880s, having a mintage of just 9,450, and it seems that 9,000 of these have vanished over the years. Perhaps no more than 450 coins seem to have survived the turbulent times of the west, where the majority of these, including the present piece circulated heavily. Still having excellent eye-appeal, this large gold coin would be the perfect coin in a type set of Carson City coinage.

The previous year, 1884 had a relative large mintage for this Mint, and it appeared that 1885 would continue this trend. However, after only two months of production, January and February, a series of subsequent and sometimes unrelated events closed down the Carson City Mint for four years, not being reopened again until 1885. As such, the output of this issue would remain relatively low, and commerce quickly absorbed the pieces which had already been minted.

The present piece obviously spent some time in circulation, but the pleasing rose-gold color on the surfaces does not indicate at any misuse in this period, or afterwards. The coin is totally original, a factor which has become increasingly important with these large and heavy gold coins. Some luster still remains in the protected fields, especially on the reverse, which appears to be in slightly better condition than the obverse. Overall, the coin sure looks quite pleasing and would make for an excellent addition to any collection. A popular Mint, Denomination and era of United States history makes for an excellent combination.
