1885 Gold Dollar (1885 G$1) NGC MS68. 1885 Indian Princess Head, Large Head (Type 3), Gold Dollar. James B. Longacres gold dollar design was first struck in 1849 in answer to the abundance of fresh gold flowing into the U.S. economy from the hills of California during the Gold Rush. Struck from 1849-1889, the diminutive dollar was issued in three distinct design types. Though collected by some in complete sets, the gold dollar is more often included in type sets increasing demand for top pop pieces and making exceptionally high grade specimens particularly difficult to locate.
The absolutely pristine example offered here is a top pop piece with just 4 certified in this lofty grade and NONE higher at NGC/PCGS combined. It is hard to fathom a way to improve this virtually perfect piece. The strike is HAMMERED and the devices are razor sharp. The fields are unblemished and simply ooze with luster. The deep rich amber and honey gold hues are stunning. This piece is in a single word..magnificent!!! You may possibly encounter a gold dollar that is this exceptional again someday but you will not find one better.
