1888 Double Eagle (1888 $20) DDR FS-801, PCGS MS63. The featured coin is an 1888 Liberty Head $20 double eagle graded MS63 by PCGS. This exceptional coin is made even rarer by the doubled die that it possesses. Cataloged as DDR FS-801, the doubled die on the reverse of the coin is evident on most of the obverse lettering, but is strongest on the words TWENTY DOLLARS, and the lower ribbon. This coin features bright pristine golden surfaces. Incredibly well struck devices are exhibited on both the obverse and reverse. This is a spectacular coin that is made even better by the doubled die that it possesses.
The Liberty Head $20 double eagle began to be produced in 1849 and upon its introduction it became the largest denomination of all regular United States issues. It was authorized to be coined by the Mint Act of March 3, 1849 and is struck in .900 fine gold. Over the course of its production, three types of Liberty Head double eagles were produced. The Liberty Head double eagle design is credited to James B. Longacre but has its roots in Christian Gobrecht's $10 Eagle of 1839. The obverse features a Greco-Roman head of Liberty facing left, with hair tied in a bun and curls flowing down to the base of the bust.
She is wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars surround the bust with the date positioned below. The reverse depicts an eagle with outstretched wings holding an olive branch and arrows. The Type 1, struck from 1849-1866, includes a shield with straight sides with no motto. The Type 2, struck from 1886-1876, has a rounded ornate shield and the motto, IN GOD WE TRUST was added to the oval of stars above the eagle. The featured coin is a Type 3, struck from 1877-1907. The reverse is different from the Type 1 and Type 2 in that the Type 3 features the denomination, TWENTY DOLLARS, at the bottom of the revere.
