1889-CC Morgan Silver Dollar PCGS AU58. The silver dollars struck at the Carson City Mint in 1889 are considered to be one of the key dates of the Morgan silver dollar series. A total of 350,000 pieces were produced in the final three months of the year, after coinage operations had ceased after 1885. Of these, however, an estimated 250,000 to 325,000 pieces were presumably melted, creating the true rarity of this issue in all grades.
Most of the pieces that survived the melting pot were eventually placed into circulation, and stayed there for at least a while. As a result, this issue is occasionally available in circulated grades, but becomes rare in anything higher than AU-50. Add to that the popularity of the coins struck at the Carson City Mint, and we see the reason of the popularity of this coin in any condition.
The present piece is a wonderful slider, which could easily be mistaken for a true uncirculated coin. Only the slightest cabinet friction is visible on the highest coins, and it can be presumed that this coin never circulated. Luster is abundant on both sides, and the fields are much less bagmarked than usually seen for this issue. A wonderful opportunity to obtain this rarity at the fraction of the cost if it where in a Mint state holder.
