1889 Gold Dollar (1889 G$1) NGC MS68. This incredible 1889 gold dollar shimmers with mint luster on both sides. It is free of nicks and scratches, which is consistent with the grade. Although much of the mintage of this date survives today because they were saved as the last date of the issue, this beautiful Superb Gem survivor is one of the nicest. Interestingly enough, the coin also has a rotated reverse, which NGC did not note on the holder. All gold error coins are rare, and one of this grade is particularly so. The 1889 is a Type III Large Size, Broad Head design that was issued from 1856 to 1889. The prior issue had to be redesigned because the date wore out easily, and they were too weak in the centers of the obverse so that newly minted coins look worn.
The design shows a Caucasian Liberty wearing a stylized Native American headdress. Longacre used this device in several denominations. The wreath on the reverse, copied from the one on the Flying Eagle cent, shows corn, cotton, maple, and maybe tobacco leaves around the denomination and the date. Pop 16/none finer.
