1889-S Eagle (1889-S $10) PCGS MS63. This creamy 1889-S Eagle is sharply struck on both sides. Mint luster is prominent within the devices of the obverse and even more so on the reverse. The coin shows slight abrasion on Libertys cheek and neck and a couple of marks on the reverse.
The S mint mark is filled, which is typical for the date. This eagle, design by Christian Gobrecht, is the Type 2 variety. It is different from Type 1 in that the motto IN GOD WE TRUST has been added to a banner between the eagles wings. The design is the Coronet Head, similar to the one used on Large Cents of 1839 to 1857, except that Libertys hair does not extend below the truncation.
Since most of these coins were accumulated for their bullion value and were carelessly handled, this coins state of preservation is noteworthy because it is more valuable than a generic gold eagle. PCGS population reports show 210 in MS63 with 16 better.
