1890-CC $20 (1890-CC Double Eagle) PCGS AU53. This 1890-CC Double Eagle (Carson City Double Eagle) has the look of a coin that would grade several points higher. The strike is bold with full details seen on the centers of the stars, Libertys hair, and the design details of the reverse. The grade is confirmed by the separation in the lines of Libertys hair above the eye, the top of the head, and the back portion of the coronet. For the grade, the surfaces are clean, original, and free of distracting marks. The vertical line on the obverse right is on the holder not the coin. Subdued mint luster is seen on both sides.

The 1890-CC double eagle is a Type 3 coin. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST has been added to the oval of stars on the reverse along with the denomination change from TWENTY D. to TWENTY DOLLARS. The coin was originally designed by James B. Longacre. It shows a Liberty head facing left wearing coronet inscribed LIBERTY. Her hair is tightly tied in the back with two loose curls hanging down her neck to the end of the truncation. She is surrounded by thirteen six pointed stars with the date below. Dentils are near the edge on both sides of the coin. The reverse shows a heraldic eagle with elaborate ribbons on both sides of the shield extending from the top corner down to the eagles tail feathers. The ribbons are inscribed, on the left E PLURIBUS and UNUM on the right. The ribbons were added to the design to symbolize the denomination since this was the first twenty dollar coin. There is an oval of thirteen stars above the eagles head and an arc of rays from wing tip to wing tip behind the upper half of the oval. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is in an arc above the eagle, and the denomination TWENTY D. is below. The mint mark is between the tail feathers and the N of TWENTY.

Although one of the more common issues, the 1890-CC is quite popular because of the allure of the Carson City Mint and Western gold in general.
