1890-CC Half Eagle (1890-CC $5) NGC MS61. Bright luster outlines the devices of this mint state 1890-CC Half Eagle. Aside from a minimum of surface erosion marks, which is in keeping with the grade, the sides are virtually smooth and free of handling and other distracting marks. The strike is above average on the reverse and somewhat less so on the obverse. Christian Gobrecht designed this coin, and it is the Type 2 variety. IN GOD WE TRUST was added to a banner below STATES OF in 1866.
The coin portrays Liberty facing left wearing a coronet with her hair tied with beads in a bun. Curls flow down the back and side of her neck. LIBERTY is inscribed on the coronet, and thirteen stars surround the portrait. The date is below the truncation. In addition to the motto, the reverse shows Gobrechts modified heraldic eagle surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Below it is the denomination, FIVE D., preceded and followed by dots. The mint mark, in the case of the present coin CC for Carson City, is between the eagle and FIVE.
