The 1890-S is easily available in grades from VF to MS-62. Coins at the MS-63 level are quite scarce, and any finer coin is rare. As is the case with nearly all of the circulation strike double eagles of this era, generations ago Mint State coins were seldom seen, and old-time collectors were perfectly content to own a VF or EF.

Luckily enough, since the old-time collections were being put together, this piece has appeared on the market. It is one of only two dozen pieces graded by PCGS or NGC as MS-64, with only a single piece graded higher at both services. Because of the extremely limited number of offerings at public auction, it appears that the population reports are influenced by resubmissions as well. As a comparison, more than 200 pieces have been graded as MS-63 by both grading services combined.

This is a very flashy double eagle, dripping from luster. As can be expected for a piece of near-gem quality, the fields are clean, with only a few marks noted in the fields. The coin is completely original, toned to a somewhat darker yellow color. Sharply defined on both sides, all details have been completely struck. The coin has been stickered by CAC as well, confirming its status of an excellent coin, which is a rare opportunity for the specialist.
