1892-CC Double Eagle NGC MS63. A very lustrous and prooflike example of this Carson City double eagle, with a mintage of just 27,265 pieces. The present offering represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the finest known 1892-CC double eagles.
Mintages of gold coins at the Carson City Mint decreased rapidly in the late 1880s and 1890s. Supply of silver and gold ran out, and the once abundant Comstock mines became exhausted. As a result, the Carson City Mint closed in 1893, ending an era of coinage at this romantic Mint in Nevada.
Coinage at the Carson City commenced in early 1870, when the Mint opened. The Comstock Lode yielded a large amount of silver and a considerable amount of gold as well. As the closest Mint was San Francisco, which meant a dangerous ride across the Sierra Nevada, a new Mint was proposed in Carson City. After it opened, it turned out a fair amount of gold and silver issues, all of which are very popular with collectors these days. Prices for these pieces have remained steadily rising during the last few decades, even when overseas hoards became available. As a result, they are also perfect for the investor seeking high quality rare gold coins for his portfolio.
All Carson City double eagles are scarce to unknown in uncirculated grades, and the 1892CC is no exception. Although pieces are sometimes encountered in MS-60 or MS-61, usually heavily bag marked, MS-63 pieces such as the present offering are a major rarity. An estimated total of 1,000 to 1,100 pieces remain to exist in all grades, of which only an handful have graded MS-63 by the major grading companies, with none finer. In all uncirculated grades, only an estimated 200 are known.
The eye appeal of the present offering is tremendous. Boldly struck, nearly all details of the design are full, including Libertys hair. Only minor weakness shows on the left obverse stars, a feature common with all type three double eagles. Full luster shows on the near prooflike surfaces. No major hits are encountered on either side, with only a few minor coins that keep this coin out of an even higher holder. Wonderful medium green gold color shows, which is the natural color of the gold coming out of the Comstock Lode. A very rare opportunity to acquire one of the finest 1892-CC double eagles still in-existence.
