1892-CC Morgan Silver Dollar (1892-CC S$1 Morgan) NGC MS64 CAC. This almost pure white Carson City Morgan dollar is lustrous and frosty. There is a slight amount of toning on the dentils on both sides of the coin. The coin is graded MS64, which is confirmed by CAC. Some abrasion marks on Libertys cheek and neck keep this coin from a gem grade. The strike is full on both the obverse and reverse with every detail readily apparent.
In 1878 the Bland-Allison Act ordered the Department of the Treasury to mint two to four million dollars worth of silver each month to keep silver at artificially high levels. Large quantities of Morgan dollars were minted that did not circulate. In 1884 Democrat Grover Cleveland became president. He fired all the Republican appointees including the top officials at the Carson City Mint and shut it down. A year later it reopened as an assay office. When Republican Benjamin Harrison became president, he fired Clevelands appointees and replaced them with Republicans. In 1889 coining operations at Carson City resumed. In 1890 the Sherman Silver Purchase Act modified the Bland-Allison Act. Under it the government was required to purchase 4.5 million ounces of silver per month which was to be paid with bonds that could be redeemed for gold or silver.
