1892-S $10 (1892-S Eagle) PCGS MS63. This mint state, branch mint 1892-S Eagle shows no wear, as expected for a grading MS63. The milky white marks under Libertys chin and on the reverse are marks on the holder not the coin. The piece is well struck indicated by the centers of the obverse stars, the lines of Libertys hair, the eagles neck, and the area to the lower left of the shield. The coin is bright, fresh looking, and lustrous.

The Gold Eagle (1866-1907) continued the Coronet motif designed by Christian Gobrecht. The principal difference between the previous issue and the new type was the addition of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST to a banner above the eagles head between its outstretched wings.

It was primarily the instance of the Reverend M. R. Watkinson that the motto was added to the eagle. Members of Congress who agreed with Watkinson probably were afraid of being called atheists. The Coinage Act of 1865 mandated that the motto In God We Trust be added to the larger silver and gold denomination coins. In 1863 Mint Director James Pollock requested of Treasury Secretary Salmon Chase that the motto GOD IS OUR TRUST be added to the new two cent coin designed by James Longacre. Chase agreed but told Pollock that it should be IN GOD WE TRUST. Other mottos proposed at the time were GOD OUR TRUST, GOD IS OUR SHIELD, and GOD AND COUNTRY. The wording of the motto became law in 1864. At that time the parody, In God we trust. All others pay cash, was first heard. The coinage act of the next year mandated that all silver and gold coins minted after January 1, 1866 large enough to carry it have the motto added. For gold coinage the new law meant the motto was required on all coins larger than the three dollar piece.

The 1892-S eagle is a scarce coin. Small numbers have been recovered from Europe and elsewhere, but most are not high quality coins. In its population report, PGCS shows 53 in MS63 with only 1 better.
