1893-S Morgan Silver Dollar (1893-S Morgan S$1) PCGS VF30. This very pleasant, collector grade 1893-S Morgan Silver Dollar, series key shows much feather detail for the grade. The surfaces are silver-grey with darker toning around the obverse rim and somewhat lighter around the reverse rim. The surfaces are clean and virtually mark free. In keeping with the grade, wear is seen on the hair above the ear.
We see about three-quarters of the rest of the hair detail. On the reverse we see partial breast, neck, and head feathers. The wings feathers are mainly whole, including the tips. Aside from the 1895 Proof coin, the 1893-S is the key to the Morgan Dollar series. Its limited mintage, lack of early numismatic care, and melting as a result of the Pittman Act of 1918, cause it to be rare in all grades for this most popularly collected series.
In 1962-63, the Treasury Department released huge quantities of hoarded Morgan dollars to the general public. While there were many dates that had previously been thought of as rarities and were now relatively common, the 1893-S was not among them. It has remained elusive in all grades and eagerly sought by collectors and investors.
