1893-S Morgan Silver Dollar (1893-S Morgan $1) PCGS VF35. This low mintage 1893-SMorgan Dollar is one of the keys to the series. The coins shows mostly light grey devices with darker fields. Most of Libertys face is also darker. Pale blue, green, and russet are seen in both fields. About two-thirds of the hairlines from the top of the forehead to the ear show clearly, and the ear is bold, in keeping with the grade. Morgan dollars were issued annually from 1878 to 1904 and then in 1921. They show a close-up head of Liberty in profile facing left. She wears a headband inscribed LIBERTY. In her hair are cotton, corn, wheat, and tobacco. She wears a modified Phrygian cap and is surrounded with the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, thirteen stars (seven left and six right), and the date. The reverse shows an eagle with wings raised looking left. In its talons are arrows and olive branch, symbols of preparedness and peace. A wreath is below, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is above. Except for the eagles wing tips, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR, separated by stars, circumscribe the design.

The 1893-S is the key to the series because it has the lowest mintage of any date, aside from the 1895 which is only available as a proof coin. As a result of the Pittman Act of 1918, it was heavily melted. In addition there was a lack of numismatic care because in the early days, collectors tended to disregard mintmarks and collected coins by date. Authentication is always recommended because so many 1893 coins have been altered by adding an S. (Note: All USRCI coins are authenticated by one of the major grading services.)
