1894-O Half Eagle (1894-O $5) NGC MS61. Mint luster gleams from within the devices of this 1894-O Half Eagle. A couple of scrapes in front of Libertys neck and light abrasion keep this uncirculated coin from a higher mint state grade. The strike is average on both sides with most of the details evident except for some softness in Libertys hair over the ear and feathers on the arrow.
The 1894-O half eagle is a Coronet, With Motto type. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the coin shows a portrait of Liberty in profile facing left wearing a LIBERTY inscribed coronet. Her hair is tied in beads with two curls coming down her neck. Thirteen six-pointed arrows surround her, and the date is below. Around the periphery are dentils on both sides. The reverse shows the heraldic eagle with raised wings facing left. The required inscription surrounds the eagle interrupted by the wing tips. Separated with dots from the inscription is the denomination, written as FIVE D. Above the eagle on a banner is the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The O mint mark is just below the juncture of the olive branch and arrows.
The coin was minted in New Orleans, the only Southern branch mint that eventually reopened as a mint after the Civil War. The other Southern branch mints were Charlotte and Dahlonega.
